My name is Isabella Bruni. I am 11 years old. I started dancing when I was 3. I came to Patterson School of Ballet when I was 9 years old.
When people think of ballet, they think of the fluffy tutus and the pink satin shoes. But when I think about ballet, I think about more than that. I think about the hard work and discipline, flexibility, and performance.
Ballet is hard work!!! It takes a lot of time. It takes a long period of time to get a specific step correct. You also have to be disciplined to do that step a million times until you get it right. You have to have a strong work ethic. You have to make sure you are at every class. Missing even one class can put you behind. It is important to make up any missed work, just like at school.
As a ballerina you have to constantly work on your flexibility. Stretching is a big part of becoming a ballerina. One thing stretching does is prevent injury. Another thing it does is help your extension and turn out. There are specific stretches for different things depending on what you need to work on. Stretching should be something you do on a daily basis. It is a lot of fun to do with a friend.
All of this hard work and stretching leads up to a performance. This is an opportunity to show off what you have learned in the past year. Performance is my favorite part about dance because when I perform I free my mind and I love that I can share the performance with my friends and family. When I perform I feel like I accomplished something extremely impossible and it is the best feeling.
Yes, there are the beautiful costumes and pink satin shoes, but I came to learn that it is so much more than that. The hard work, discipline, flexibility, and performance are things I will carry with me throughout my whole life.
